The Phantom’s Revenge @ Lowbrow this Saturday

The Phantom’s Revenge is an up & comer from the house capital of the world: France, and will perform at the Lowbrow Palace, located on 111 E. Robinson, this Saturday. The electronic artist hails from Nimes, France. At the ripe age of 23, he has a staggering set of singles floating around in the underground french house scene as well as a huge remix collection. His style is most definitely French house but is ultimately defined by his sampling of long-forgotten funk and disco gems. Most of his samples contain riffs from the mid to late 70’s to early 80’s funk or groove r&b, which put a classic spin on a new face. With France producing such important electronic artists as Guy Manuel de Homem Christo and DJ Falcon, The Phantom’s Revenge can only do more to maintain France’s stronghold on the house music scene. His chopping and glitch cuts occur nearly seamlessly and showcase his undeniable talent behind the boards. This performance is only $5 with RSVP, $10 night of the show. You can RSVP at tradewindpresents.com. ***

Local Soldier Writes Children’s Book

Army Captain Patrick McGrail, from Memphis, TN, who also resides in El Paso, TX, recently published his first children’s book called “As Close as the Moon.” One of the many stressors kids of deployed soldiers face is prolonged parental absences. Consequently, these children show “separation anxiety, temper tantrums, and changes in eating habits,” according to a research finding posted on The National Center for PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder). “As Close as the Moon” deals with this subject. The story is about a boy and his father, a soldier who gets deployed to Iraq. In order to maintain a connection, the moon acts as their special medium while separated. “As Close as the Moon,” said McGrail, who is 43, is written in a “simple and meaningful language that children can understand.” The story is based on true events; it incorporates experiences that McGrail had with his three children, Sean, 6; Hollis, 9; and Patrick, 10. While in Iraq, McGrail said that every night he would look at the moon and think of his children. “I knew that they (his children) were outside watching the moon, the same one I was looking hours earlier and you really feel that it is tangible,” [...]

At The Drive-In is Back!

Local alternative psyche rock legends, At the Drive In, whom at times, various members of the group have always refused the possibility of reuniting for a few shows, are reunited. The group performed in El Paso Friday the 13th at Tricky Falls, located on 209 S. El Paso St. This must be a sign of the end times, impossible things start to happen, and in popular music this is one of them. Their reunification was sealed earlier this year with the announcement of two performances at the Coachella Music Festival. Tickets to their performance in Marfa, TX were gone in a mere fifteen minutes. The group performed in Austin, a few days before the Marfa show, at a venue called Red Seven. One could imagine that tickets to that show disappeared within minutes as well. Adding more heat to their mini Texas tour, another show, this one in Dallas, was announced. Their homecoming show finally happened at Tricky Falls and tickets to the show sold out. EPCB and just about everybody else knows that At The Drive-In’s influence spans well outside the confines of El Paso and the Southwest area, it’s global. EPCB met some blokes from London during SXSW [...]

Featured Artist:: Adrian Cuellar Fausto

“I usually start my pieces without any specific direction, I like to keep it this way. My artistic style stems from the principles of ‘drawing’ and ‘mark making.’ I find pleasure in the constant back and forth struggle between figurative and non figurative forms, which itself becomes a significant component of my work. Contrary to traditional drawing and painting, mark making has been a step forward in finding my own sense of originality. I feel like my art will evolve in due time, and become more personal as long as I continue to learn. Willem de Kooning, Anselm Kiefer, and Cy Twombly have been my greatest influences. I find inspiration in unusual places and things (e.g., textures, cracks on walls, street art). Although others would not consider the preceding as art, I find these to be the most visually stimulating.” -Adrian Cuellar Fausto

DJ Drez, master turntablist, dropped some chill ass beats ‘n tracks on Saturday night at the Lowbrow Palace, located on 112 E. Robinson Ave. Drez had his watchers in high spirits. Even those that weren’t on the dance floor in front of the stage were captivated by the DJ’s energy. The awesome vibe at the venue that night also contributed to the good performance by Drez. photographs by Joey Lozano

The Soilent Green Files:: 2012, A Time for Legalization

The upcoming year is said to be the end of the world, a spiritual shift, or some other significant event for the whole of humanity. While opinions differ on the significance of this year, one thing is certain, the marijuana legalization movement is gaining ground in a big way here in the United States. As of 2011, 15 states across the nation and Washington, D.C. already allow marijuana use for medical reasons. California led legalization efforts in the U.S. with the failed but widely popular Proposition 19 back in 2010 which would have allowed for adult possession of cannabis in this state by anyone over 21 years of age. Colorado and Washington State have voter initiatives on the November ballot that plan to regulate marijuana use for adults in a manner similar to alcohol or tobacco. Colorado just recently had enough registered voters petition the state to have Amendment 64 on the statewide ballot. Over 160, 000 voters signed the petition in the initial drive. The Secretary of State initially rejected the measure saying that an additional 2,500 signatures were needed on February 3. Volunteers and activists for the campaign responded to his demands by turning in over 14,000 more [...]

SXSW 2012:: Reign of Hip Hop, Storm of People

2012′s SXSW was different for EPCB. We were returning veterans with a plan – well sort of… This year hip hop was large and in charge and rock showed up to the party but not as strong and belligerent as in previous years. During Southby I usually try to listen for rock and roll that sounds interesting, this year I really didn’t hear anything that sounded cool and different. But the rock stuff that was worth watching like a showcase featuring Jack White and his upstart all girl rock group The Black Belles was ridiculously impossible to get into. Even if you did have a badge, if you weren’t there early enough, just start walking broseph. It’s possible that the departure of famed Austin music venue Emo’s and it’s strange progeny, Emo’s Jr., from 6th street; affected this year’s rock experience. Ever since EPCB began covering SXSW, Emo’s has always been the place where we’d see the best rock shows because it was such an intimate venue, bands like Titus Andronicus, The Black Angels, Kid Congo and even old school group The Sonics rocked our faces, literally. That being said, simply put, this year hip hop sounded awesome to me [...]

It Begins! Ghostland Observatory perform SouthBy kick off show at Moody Theatre

SXSW is slowly creeping towards us and spontaneous moments of awesome are beginning to happen in good ‘ol ATX… On Friday, Ghostland Observatory announced they would be playing a free show at the Moody Theatre via their facebook page. So one could imagine the frenzy that was incited to get to the venue as quick as possible before it filled up with equally in the know Austinites. As you can tell from the photos, singer Aaron Behrens and multi instrumentalist Thomas Turner unleashed a dramatic performance. Behrens’ vocals and dancing light up the stage and Turner’s sound manipulation makes your feet move. Their electro funk style combined with their wild laser show surely fizzled the brains of the lucky audience. photographs by Tino Herrera
